Handout - Negative Marking
Here is a discussion of negative marking that I have made available to my students. Each year as AP exams approach, ponderous numbers of students demonstrate a tenacious misconception about the effects of negative marking on exams. Many students have the notion that the grading system of the AP exam (or any similar assessment in which negative marking is employed) penalizes guessing and that one should not answer a question unless they are certain of the answer. On the contrary, they certainly are not penalized for guessing and neither does it give them an unfair advantage. Because they sense the relevance to their own pursuits, students are receptive to the mathematics in this document and it can be a great approach to ideas like test validity, probability, binomial random variables, expected value, and risk assessment.
